I got up and met that American woman (Lindsey) in the common room. She's going to Thessaloniki today for a few weeks, so we both needed bus tickets and headed over to the station. It's about a 3 hour trip to Ohrid from here and I booked a ticket for midday. We got lunch in the Ottoman section of town and I gave everything a once over again before heading back to the hostel and getting the bus. Since I'm planning to be in Thessaloniki soon, I may meet up with Lindsey there.
The bus ride was nice in a couple parts but mostly not very exciting. There was a strange moment where our driver pulled over on the side of the road to collect a package from a guy just standing on the side of the highway. The breakdown lane seems to be a surprising region for commerce, as I also saw some guy had a whole produce stand set up there. Not sure why anyone would want produce that's been getting blasted by car exhaust all day. When I got into Ohrid it was absolutely pouring and incredibly windy. I was up really late last night because the cycle of the washing machine was ridiculously long and I had to wait for that to finish before switching over to the even more ridiculously long (5.5 hours?) drying cycle. As such, I hadn't got much sleep and more or less passed out as soon as I got checked in. The wind kept blowing open the windows in my room and knocking stuff around outside, but I got some sleep. Oscar's here but I didn't really feel like trekking outside in the weather, so I only went far enough to grab some groceries and make dinner. I'll see him tomorrow when it's supposed to be nice. The city is bigger than I expected but doesn't seem to have too much going on.
There are more people than I'd expected here, so I spent a while talking to a few people from Wisconsin. Other than that there were 3 or 4 guys who looked to be at least a decade older than me and I was much less interested in hanging out with, including a very drunk middle aged Canadian who ranted about a wide variety of things at me while I was cooking. Kind of a strange vibe in this place - looking to see the sights here tomorrow and then move on to Greece.
